Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
