Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals using such treatments should be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to starting mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle management.
